Hikojiro Kuwayama
SUNCO LUGGAGE was established in 1893 (Year 26 of the Meiji Era) in the Shirakawa-cho of Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, by Hikojiro Kuwayama. Our founder was born in Oono-cho in Aichi Prefecture where he began making luggage for Tsunejiro Takeuchi, the founder of the luggage industry in Aichi. After a period of training under Takeuchi, Kuwayama branched off to form his own independent company. A quiet and diligent man, his nickname was "the Buddha", stemming from his intense devotion to manufacturing luggage. This passion has been shared by SUNCO employees for well over a century.

In 1943, Hikojiro's first son, Kazuo, founded a joint-stock company and the up-till-then private enterprise became incorporated. Kazuo built up a factory in Tashiro-Hondori in Nagoya and began luggage production in 1945. It was at this time that luggage materials began to change from mostly leather to man-made materials. SUNCO luggage began assembly line production, a process that transformed the company.

"nihomaru" TOPICS
Sunco produced its first suitcase, the "Nihomaru", in 1950, and our company's history is the story of a passion for luggage. We are proud of having worked enthusiastically for over 100 years to refine and develop our luggage products to meet your every need.

The production of an aluminum-framed suitcase with an ABS resin body finally began after a long period of development throughout the late 1960s. The hard-sided suitcase that is so widely available today had its origins during that time. The SMR, which reached consumers in April of 1971, turned out to be a masterpiece of SUNCO's marketing efforts. The SMR was an upright 4-wheel suitcase specifically made to conform to Japanese ergonomics and was a great success in terms of comfort and styling. It has become the model for nearly all present-day suitcases.

Influenced by the rapid industrialization of Southeast Asia, Sunco Luggage went in a new direction, establishing production facilities there while maintaining a production line in Japan only for luxury goods. Hikojiro's passion for excellence was maintained in our sub-contracted facilities and through developments in new technology and quality control. This transplantation enabled our Southeast Asian production facilities to provide high-quality luggage at a lower price, further increasing demand. With the purchase of raw materials from overseas and increased sales outside of Japan, SUNCO LUGGAGE became a truly global enterprise. Furthermore, we introduced the epoch-making WS4D in February of 1997, the world's first 4-wheel suitcase with a trolley bar. Our 360-degree revolving casters, patented worldwide, that include built-in revolving 180-degree stoppers, epitomize our excellence in technology and product development.
